1. Agreement & who we are
Personal Vault (the “app”) is an Android password manager and secure vault published by Mudassir Khan, India (“we”, “us”, “our”). These Terms of Service (the “terms”) form a legally binding agreement between you and us about your use of the app and of this website.
By downloading, installing or using the app, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app and uninstall it.
These terms work together with our Privacy Policy, Cookie Policy and Purchases & Refunds page, which form part of this agreement.
2. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example to reflect new features, changes in the law or changes to how Google Play works. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
If a change materially affects your rights, we will give you reasonable notice before it takes effect, for example on this website or inside the app. Changes will not apply retroactively, and they will not reduce what you have already paid for (such as an existing Pro Lifetime purchase or the current paid period of a Pro Monthly subscription). If you do not agree to updated terms, you can stop using the app at any time and, where applicable, cancel your subscription.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country if that is higher, to use the app.
If you are under 18 (or under the age of majority where you live), you may use the app only with the involvement and agreement of a parent or legal guardian, who accepts these terms on your behalf and is responsible for any purchases made.
You may not use the app if you are prohibited from doing so under applicable law, including the export control and sanctions laws described in section 18.
4. Licence to use the app
Subject to these terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable and revocable licence to download, install and use the app on Android devices that you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial purposes.
The app is licensed, not sold. We (and our licensors) keep all rights not expressly granted to you in these terms.
App store terms
The app is distributed through Google Play. Your use of Google Play, including downloading the app and making purchases, is also governed by the Google Play Terms of Service and related Google policies. If there is a conflict between these terms and Google Play’s terms about how Google Play itself works, Google’s terms apply to that part.
If we ever distribute the app through the Apple App Store, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement minimum terms will apply in addition to these terms. In that case, Apple is not a party to these terms, is not responsible for the app or its content, has no obligation to provide maintenance or support, and is a third-party beneficiary entitled to enforce these terms against you.
Open-source components
The app includes open-source software. Those components are licensed under their own licences, which are listed on our open-source licences page. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under those licences.
5. Your data & your responsibility
Personal Vault is designed so that we never see your vault. There is no account and no Personal Vault server. Your vault data is encrypted and stored on your device. This design protects your privacy, but it also means that you, not us, are responsible for keeping access to your data.
We cannot recover your vault
We have no copy of your data, your PIN or your encryption keys, so we cannot access, reset, recover or restore your vault for any reason. If you forget your PIN and have no working biometric unlock, or if you lose, reset or damage your device without a usable backup, your vault data will be permanently lost.
Backups
Backups are optional and are your responsibility. The app lets you:
- create local encrypted backup files (
.pvbackup), which you store wherever you choose; and - back up to the private app-data folder of your own Google Drive account, in which case Google’s terms and privacy policy apply to that storage.
We recommend making regular backups, keeping at least one copy somewhere other than your phone, and testing that you can restore it. A backup is only useful if you also remember what you need to decrypt it.
Keeping your vault safe
- Keep your PIN secret and do not reuse it elsewhere.
- Keep your device’s operating system up to date and protect the device with a screen lock.
- Do not install the app on rooted or compromised devices, or alongside apps you do not trust; we cannot protect your data on a device that is already compromised.
- Be careful when copying secrets to the clipboard or sharing them through other apps.
Exports
Unencrypted exports are readable by anyone
Exports in JSON, CSV, ZIP or PDF format are not encrypted. Anyone who gets hold of those files can read everything in them. Only create them when you need to, store them securely and delete them when you are done.
6. Acceptable use
Because your vault stays encrypted on your device, we do not and cannot see what you store in it. You remain responsible for complying with the law in how you use the app. You agree not to:
- use the app to break any law, or to infringe anyone else’s rights;
- use the app to store or manage credentials or information that you have obtained unlawfully or are not authorised to hold;
- copy, modify, decompile, disassemble or reverse engineer the app, except to the extent that applicable law expressly allows this despite this restriction (or an open-source licence permits it for that component);
- remove, bypass or interfere with licensing checks, purchase verification, advertising or security features, or unlock Pro without a valid purchase;
- sell, rent, sublicense, redistribute or publish the app or modified versions of it, or offer it through any store or website other than official channels;
- generate fraudulent ad impressions or clicks, or otherwise abuse the advertising in the free version; or
- use the app in a way that could damage, disable or impair it or any related service.
7. Free version & advertising
The free version of Personal Vault includes all of the app’s features. It is supported by advertising served by Google AdMob. We request non-personalised ads. You can read more about how ads handle data in our Privacy Policy.
We choose which ad networks to use, but we do not control the content of individual ads and do not endorse the products or services advertised. Your dealings with advertisers are between you and them.
8. Pro purchases & subscriptions
Personal Vault Pro removes ads. It does not unlock any additional features. You can try every feature for free before deciding whether to buy. Pro is available as:
- Pro Monthly: an auto-renewing monthly subscription (US$2.99 per month). It renews automatically each month unless you cancel in Google Play at least 24 hours before the renewal date. If you cancel, Pro continues until the end of the period you have already paid for.
- Pro Lifetime: a one-time in-app purchase (US$49) linked to the Google account you use to buy it. “Lifetime” means for as long as we continue to offer and maintain the app, not for the lifetime of the purchaser. If we ever discontinue the app, we will not owe you a refund except where the law requires one.
All purchases are processed by Google Play, and prices are shown in your local currency, including any applicable taxes, before you confirm. We do not receive or store your payment details. If we introduce a free trial or change subscription prices, Google Play will show you the relevant terms and notify you as its policies require.
Full details about billing, cancelling, restoring purchases and refunds are on our Purchases & Refunds page.
9. Your consumer rights
If you are a consumer, you may have rights under the laws of the country where you live that cannot be waived or limited by contract. Nothing in these terms affects those rights, and if any part of these terms conflicts with them, the mandatory law prevails.
EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland
You normally have a 14-day right to withdraw from a contract for digital content bought online. For digital content supplied immediately, such as Pro, you lose this right once supply begins, provided you gave your express consent to immediate supply and acknowledged that you would lose the right of withdrawal. Google Play handles this consent at checkout. You also have statutory rights if digital content is faulty or not as described, including under EU Directive 2019/770 and the UK Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Other regions
- Australia: our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law.
- India: you have rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, including the right to raise a grievance with us (see section 21).
- Brazil, South Korea, Japan and elsewhere: mandatory consumer protection laws, such as Brazil’s Consumer Defence Code, apply where relevant and prevail over these terms.
10. Third-party services
The app relies on some services provided by Google, each governed by Google’s own terms and policies:
- Google Play for distribution, app updates, purchases and subscriptions;
- Google AdMob for advertising in the free version;
- Google Sign-In and Google Drive, only if you choose to back up to your Google Drive; and
- Google ML Kit for text recognition (OCR), which runs on your device.
We are not responsible for third-party services, their availability or changes to them, and your use of them is at your own discretion. If a third-party service stops working or changes, some features of the app (for example Google Drive backup) may stop working too.
11. Updates, availability & changes to the app
We may update, change, add or remove features of the app, and we may release updates that fix bugs or security issues. Some updates may be necessary for the app to keep working safely, and you may need to install them to continue using the app.
We aim to support a reasonable range of Android versions, but we are not obliged to keep supporting older Android versions or devices. We may also suspend or discontinue the app, in whole or in part, at any time. If we discontinue the app, we will try to give reasonable advance notice so you can export or back up your data. Because your data lives on your device, discontinuation will not by itself delete it.
Reminders are best-effort
Reminders and notifications rely on Android’s alarm, battery-optimisation and notification settings, which we do not control. Delivery is not guaranteed. Do not rely on the app as your only reminder for critical, medical, legal or financial deadlines.
12. Intellectual property
The app, this website and all related content, code, designs, logos and the Personal Vault name are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by intellectual property laws. Except for the licence in section 4 and your rights under open-source licences, you have no rights in them. You may not use our name or branding in a way that suggests we endorse you, without our written permission.
The content you store in your vault belongs to you. We claim no rights in it.
If you send us feedback or suggestions, you allow us to use them freely, without payment or obligation to you. You do not have to send feedback, and please never include vault data or your PIN.
13. Security reports
If you believe you have found a security vulnerability, please report it privately as described in our Vulnerability Disclosure Policy. Good-faith research carried out in line with that policy is covered by its safe-harbour commitments, and we will not treat it as a breach of section 6.
14. Disclaimers
We work hard to make Personal Vault secure and reliable, but no software is perfect. Please read this section carefully.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE APP AND THIS WEBSITE ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, THAT DATA WILL NEVER BE LOST OR CORRUPTED, OR THAT THE APP IS SECURE AGAINST EVERY POSSIBLE ATTACK.
In particular, and without limiting the above:
- encryption protects your data but cannot protect it on a device that is compromised by malware, rooted, or accessed by someone who knows your PIN;
- the password generator, password health checks and two-factor (TOTP) codes are tools to help you. They do not guarantee that any account will not be compromised, and TOTP codes depend on your device clock being accurate;
- on-device text recognition (OCR) may misread text, so always check the results; and
- reminders and notifications may be delayed or not delivered.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties. If you are a consumer, you keep any statutory rights and guarantees that cannot be excluded, and this section applies only to the extent the law allows.
15. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, AND SUBJECT TO THE EXCEPTIONS BELOW:
- WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, REVENUE, GOODWILL OR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE APP OR THESE TERMS, INCLUDING LOSS OF VAULT DATA CAUSED BY A FORGOTTEN PIN, A LOST OR DAMAGED DEVICE, OR A MISSING OR UNUSABLE BACKUP; AND
- OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE APP OR THESE TERMS WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE APP IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, AND (B) US$50 (OR ₹4,000 IF YOU ARE IN INDIA).
What we do not limit
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for:
- death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
- fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation;
- gross negligence or wilful misconduct, where the applicable law does not allow liability for these to be limited; or
- any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.
These limits also do not affect your statutory rights as a consumer. In particular:
- EU and EEA: we remain liable as required by mandatory law, including for faulty digital content.
- UK: nothing affects your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and we are responsible for foreseeable loss and damage caused by our breach of these terms or our failure to use reasonable care and skill.
- Germany: we are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, under the Product Liability Act, and for injury to life, body or health. For slight negligence, we are liable only for breach of essential contractual obligations (obligations whose fulfilment makes proper performance of the contract possible and on which you may regularly rely), limited to foreseeable damage typical for this type of contract.
- Australia: where the Australian Consumer Law applies and our liability for failing to meet a consumer guarantee can lawfully be limited, it is limited to supplying the services again or paying the cost of having them supplied again.
16. Indemnity
To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to indemnify us against reasonable claims, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) brought by third parties that arise from your breach of these terms or your misuse of the app in violation of law.
This section does not apply to you if you are a consumer in a country whose laws do not allow consumers to be bound by such an indemnity, and it never requires you to indemnify us for losses caused by our own fault.
17. Termination
You can stop using the app at any time by uninstalling it. Uninstalling deletes the vault stored on that device, so make a backup first if you want to keep your data. Uninstalling does not cancel a Pro subscription; you must cancel that in Google Play.
We may suspend or end your licence to use the app if you seriously or repeatedly breach these terms, or if we are required to do so by law. Where reasonable, we will tell you why and give you a chance to fix the problem. When the licence ends, you must stop using the app. If we end your licence without cause, or if the law requires it, you may be entitled to a proportionate refund of any unused paid subscription period.
Sections that by their nature should continue after termination survive it, including sections 5 (your data), 12 (intellectual property), 14 (disclaimers), 15 (limitation of liability), 16 (indemnity), 19 (governing law) and 20 (general).
18. Export controls & sanctions
The app contains encryption technology. You are responsible for complying with any laws in your country that restrict the import, export or use of encryption software. The app is intended to be classified as mass-market encryption software under the US Export Administration Regulations.
You may not download or use the app if you are located in, or ordinarily resident in, a country or region subject to comprehensive sanctions or embargoes, or if you are a person or entity named on a government sanctions or restricted-party list, or if doing so would otherwise violate applicable export control or sanctions laws.
19. Governing law & disputes
Talk to us first
If you have a problem, please contact us first at khanmudassir1248@gmail.com. Most issues can be solved quickly. We ask both of us to try to resolve any dispute informally for at least 30 days before starting court proceedings. This does not stop either of us from seeking urgent relief, and it does not affect any statutory time limits.
Governing law and courts
These terms are governed by the laws of India. Subject to the paragraph below, the competent courts of India have jurisdiction over disputes arising from these terms or the app.
If you are a consumer living in the European Union, the EEA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or any other country whose laws give consumers this protection, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of your country of residence, and you may bring claims in the courts of your home country.
No arbitration or class-action waiver
These terms do not require you to use arbitration, and they do not waive your right to take part in a class or collective action where the law allows it.
Alternative dispute resolution
We are not obliged, and are not willing, to participate in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board (Verbraucherschlichtungsstelle), unless the law requires us to. This statement is made in line with the German Consumer Dispute Resolution Act (VSBG).
20. General
- Entire agreement. These terms, together with the policies linked from them, are the whole agreement between you and us about the app and replace any earlier agreements on the same subject.
- Severability. If a court finds any part of these terms invalid or unenforceable, that part will be limited or removed to the minimum extent necessary and the rest will remain in effect.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we do not give it up and can still enforce it later.
- Assignment. You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our consent. We may transfer our rights and obligations to another organisation, for example if the app is sold, provided this does not reduce your rights under these terms or the law.
- Events beyond our control. We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as outages of third-party services, natural disasters or changes in law.
- Language. These terms are written in English. If we provide a translation, the English version prevails in case of conflict, except where local law requires otherwise.
- Third parties. Except as stated in section 4, no one other than you and us has any right to enforce these terms.
21. Contact
For questions about these terms, complaints or grievances, contact us at:
