General

Is Personal Vault really free?

Yes. Every feature — all seven vault categories, the password generator, 2FA codes, password health, backups, import and export — is free with no limits. The app shows non-personalised ads.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no email address and no online account. You set a PIN on your phone and start using the vault immediately.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes. Your vault works fully offline. The app only goes online to show ads, and to check for app updates.

Is Personal Vault available on iPhone?

Coming soon. The iPhone version is launching on the App Store soon — visit our iPhone page to get notified. Personal Vault is available for Android on Google Play today.

Can I import my passwords from another password manager?

Yes. You can import exports from Bitwarden, LastPass and 1Password, as well as generic CSV and JSON files. Delete the export file from your phone once the import is done — it isn't encrypted.

Does it generate two-factor (2FA) codes?

Yes. Add a TOTP secret to a login and Personal Vault shows the rotating 6-digit code, computed entirely on your device.

Security & privacy

Where is my data stored?

Only on your phone, inside an encrypted database. Each item is additionally encrypted with AES-256 and integrity-checked with HMAC-SHA256. The key that unlocks it is protected by your PIN and the Android Keystore.

Can you see my passwords?

No. We don't run servers and your vault never leaves your device unless you create a backup or export — and backups are encrypted before they leave. We have no way to read, reset or recover your data.

What happens if I forget my PIN?

If you enabled fingerprint or face unlock you can still get in. Otherwise your vault cannot be recovered — not by you, and not by us. That's the trade-off of real encryption. If you have a backup protected with a backup password, you can reinstall and restore it.

Why does a privacy app show ads?

Ads let us keep every feature free without accounts, subscriptions or collecting your data. The app requests non-personalised ads only, and your vault contents are never available to the ad SDK.

Is the text scanner (OCR) processed in the cloud?

No. Text recognition runs on your device using Google ML Kit's on-device model. Photos you scan are not uploaded.

What permissions does the app need?

Internet (ads, update checks), notifications and exact alarms (for reminders you create), start-on-boot (so reminders survive a restart), vibration, and Google Play billing. Camera and photos are accessed through Android's system picker only when you choose to scan something.

Backups & devices

How do backups work?

Backups are optional. You can save an encrypted .pvbackup file to a folder on your phone. Everything is encrypted on your device first, and we never have access to it. You can back up manually or on an hourly, daily or weekly schedule while the app is open.

How do I move my vault to a new phone?

Create a backup protected with a backup password, then install Personal Vault on the new phone and restore from that backup (by copying the file across). Without a backup password, a backup is tied to the original device.

Does Personal Vault sync between devices?

There is no live sync, because that would require servers. Use encrypted backups to move your vault between devices.

Your data

How do I delete my data?

Delete items or reset the vault in the app, then uninstall. Also delete any backup or export files you created. Our Data Deletion page walks you through every step.
