How can we help?
Quick guides for the most common questions. Because your vault is private, these steps happen on your phone — we can't see or change your data.
Getting started
Set up your vault in under a minute.
Backing up & restoring
Protect yourself against a lost or broken phone.
Moving to a new phone
There's no sync — here's how to move safely.
I forgot my PIN
What's possible — and what isn't.
Importing from another password manager
Bitwarden, LastPass, 1Password, CSV and JSON.
Reminders aren't showing up
Android battery settings can block notifications.
Deleting your data
Remove the vault, backups and exports.
Getting started
- Install Personal Vault from Google Play and open it.
- Choose a 4–8 digit PIN you won't forget. It can't be reset — write it down somewhere safe offline if you need to.
- Turn on fingerprint or face unlock for convenience and as a second way in.
- Add your first item from the + button, or import from another password manager.
- Set up a backup with a backup password straight away (see below).
Backing up & restoring
- Open Settings → Backup.
- Backups are saved as an encrypted file in a folder on your phone — choose the folder once so they survive a reinstall.
- Set a backup password. Without it, a backup can only be restored on the same installation of the app.
- Optionally turn on automatic backups (hourly, daily or weekly). They run while the app is open and unlocked.
To restore, open Settings → Backup → Restore, pick the backup and enter its backup password.
Moving to a new phone
- On the old phone, create a fresh backup protected with a backup password.
- Copy the
.pvbackupfile to the new phone (USB, or your own storage). - Install Personal Vault on the new phone, set a PIN, then restore from the backup.
- Check everything is there, then reset the vault on the old phone and delete leftover backup files you no longer need.
I forgot my PIN
If biometric unlock is enabled, use your fingerprint or face to get in, then change your PIN in Settings.
If not, the vault can't be decrypted. We don't hold a copy of your key, so we can't reset it either. If you have a backup protected with a backup password, reinstall the app and restore it.
Repeated wrong guesses trigger increasing waiting times, and — if you enabled it — erase the vault.
Importing from another password manager
- Export your data from the other app (usually in its web vault or desktop settings).
- Move the export file to your phone.
- In Personal Vault, open Settings → Import and choose the matching format.
- Review the imported items, then delete the export file — it is not encrypted.
Reminders aren't showing up
- Allow notifications: Android Settings → Apps → Personal Vault → Notifications.
- Allow Alarms & reminders for the app (Android 12 and later).
- Set battery usage to Unrestricted — some manufacturers aggressively stop apps in the background.
- Reminders are rescheduled after a restart, but open the app once after updating it.
Deleting your data
